I have never really understood, why anyone really bothered with viewing or partaking in that event. It never occurred to me, that this event is one of the very few occasions (others being sports events on European or world level), where all of us Europeans would be watching the same programme, as you suggested.

I would go even further, now that I read about this thought. In preparation for the ESC, the European countries are also doing the same thing as the neighbor states over a certain period of time: They elect their candidates for the contest. It is a Europe wide struggle/effort/labor (sorry, unsure about the best word to use here :) ). This struggle is sort of a connection between the people of the different European countries. Hmm, in the end, the ESC really might be good for something. Thanks for the thought.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7908816589594483185.post-59182880789738614072010-03-30T13:23:12.448+02:002010-03-30T13:23:12.448+02:00Yum! Well done!Yum! The river keeps the two sides neatly separated; most of the tension is on the East side where the artists/bohemians are gentrifying historically black neighborhoods, essentially forcing blacks and other minorities out into "The Numbers" (neighborhoods further from the city center).
~ Elizabethpdxgardengirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07131653257169490938noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7908816589594483185.post-36787177005001424482010-01-07T00:43:37.507+01:002010-01-07T00:43:37.507+01:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.textmarkerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11377964584689311775noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7908816589594483185.post-29750361158306103352009-11-05T06:42:07.964+01:002009-11-05T06:42:07.964+01:00Interesting. She argues countries that do the most for women's equality (e.g. Scandinavia) have the most balanced birth rates in terms of long term population stability. With respect to Germany, she described a limited amount of time to implement necessary reforms to encourage women to have children (e.g. daycare, paid leave from work, etc.) while there are still enough people in the workforce paying taxes to pay for it.
- Elizabethpdxgardengirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07131653257169490938noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7908816589594483185.post-47917938415479794912009-10-27T22:24:07.127+01:002009-10-27T22:24:07.127+01:00Great post and photos illustrating your points. A...Great post and photos illustrating your points. After the Waldheim Affair in the late 1980s, it was pretty difficult for Austrians to claim they were helpless victims of Hitler's aggression. They have made considerable progress in their own Vergangenheitsbewältigung in the past decade, but it's been a long time coming. (There was not even a national memorial for Jewish victims of the Holocaust until 2000.) Some say Germans had it easier, because it was harder to get away with denial in the international community. After all, the Allies encouraged Austria's facile postwar stance as "Hitler's First Victim"--thereby securing a strategic ally in Cold War tensions.

Moving even further east, the distinctions between who was a bystander, collaborator, or victim seem even blurrier. I'm curious how Hungary and Romania, for example, have dealt with their role in all this.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7908816589594483185.post-75303642197979020632009-09-25T12:25:31.912+02:002009-09-25T12:25:31.912+02:00Love the use of the word "transaction".Love the use of the word "transaction".Sarah O'Hanlonhttp://artsatrandom.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7908816589594483185.post-91663039930531216542009-09-24T16:49:57.274+02:002009-09-24T16:49:57.274+02:00In case you haven't seen this...the memorial t...In case you haven't seen this...the memorial to the Victims of War & Tyranny has a pieta-esque Kollowitz sculpture in the center.
